BIOGRAPHY
James E. Cherry is the author of Bending the Blues, a poetry chapbook published by H&H Press in 2003. Honoring the Ancestors, a full length collection of poetry is forthcoming in April 2008 from Third World Press. In 2007, his novel, Shadow of Light was published by Profile Books of London and will make its U.S. debut in June 2008. In addition, Cherry's works have been published in France, England, Canada and Nigeria, as well as The Chattahoochee Review, Callaloo, Sarasota Review, African American Review, Crab Orchard Review, Illuminations and other U.S. publications. He has studied his craft under nationally and internationally known artists such as Marvin Bell, Elizabeth Spencer, Sterling Plummp and Al Young to name a few. A member of the State of Tennessee's Artist in Education roster, he currently serves as Poet-in Resident of the West Jackson Learning Center in Jackson, TN -- an alternative school for at risk youth and conducts poetry and writing workshops throughout the year. Cherry is the founder/president of the Griot Collective of West Tennessee, a poetry workshop. Presently, he resides in Jackson, TN with his wife Tammy.
